My father was a general surgeon, and I was always very interested in his work. While participating in an elective in cardiothoracic surgery as a medical student, I interacted with many people who were facing life-threatening illnesses. This stimulated my interest in psychiatry, and specifically in traumatic stress.

My research has led to breakthroughs in our understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) through the study of police officers, soldiers in combat, veterans, and civilians who have been exposed to sudden, usually life-threatening events. By mapping out circuits of the brain, researchers in our Department of Psychiatry are also making advances in how we diagnose, treat, and prevent conditions like schizophrenia, addiction, depression, dementia, and traumatic brain injury.

At 秘密研究所 Langone, we not only have expertise in treating mental health conditions, but our clinicians also have compassion and a commitment to patients that go far beyond simply providing quality care. I take the time to listen to what my patients are feeling. From so many years of supporting people dealing with mental illness, I understand and empathize with the pain they鈥檙e going through. I am deeply committed to developing a trusting relationship to help patients recover their sense of effectiveness and hope for the future.

鈥淭he discovery of biomarkers for psychiatric conditions is advancing how we diagnose and treat these disorders.鈥

Charles R. Marmar, MD Psychiatrist

Research Summary

I am Peter H. Schub Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at 秘密研究所 Grossman School of Medicine, and I am the Director of the 秘密研究所 Langone Health Center for Precision Medicine in Alcohol Use Disorder and PTSD. My primary research focus revolves around the utilization of genomic and circuit biomarkers to forward the field of precision medicine specifically addressing alcohol use disorder and PTSD. Currently, I am the Principal Investigator on several projects supported by NIH and the Department of Defense. These include an NIH P01 center grant focused on harnessing biomarkers to customize treatments for alcohol use disorder comorbid with PTSD; a Department of Defense Center grant dedicated to enriching our understanding of clinical subtypes and their endophenotypes for military service鈥搑elated PTSD and thus refining precision psychiatry; and an NIH R01 for enhancing precision medicine for Gabapentin treatment of AUD through system pharmacology. Furthermore, I am Co-Principal Investigator for a DARPA project whose focus is to not only build resilience in healthcare workers, but to do so by harnessing wellness platforms and advanced computational modeling. My recent research achievements include the discovery of genomic, metabolomic, and proteomic biomarkers for PTSD diagnostic screening for veterans, the use of speech-based biomarkers for diagnostic screening of PTSD in veterans, identifying pre-deployment genomic, metabolomic, and proteomic biomarkers to predict PTSD in active military personnel, and employing advanced computational machine learning methods for building causal models of clinical features. This last advancement aids in identifying likely responders to the Extended-Release Gabapentin Enacarbil treatment for alcohol use disorder.
